Submarine gates are a specialized type of gate used in injection molding that aims to hide any visible marks that traditional gates might leave on molded parts. These gates enter the mold cavity through an entry point located below the mold's parting line. During the ejection process, the gate automatically shears off, eliminating visible scars on the surface of the products.
Typically angled between 25 to 45 degrees, submarine gates allow for a highly efficient flow of molten plastic. This not only ensures a high-quality mold but can also accelerate the injection process. For example, companies using submarine gates have reported cycle time reductions of up to 20%, showcasing its importance in modern mold-making.
The Rigid Linear motor equipped Sodick AL40G Die Sinking EDM machine is the ideal machine for making Sub-Gates due to the fact that with linear motors you have such high acceleration (over 1G of acceleration) and positional precision (.01 micron feedback) that flushing holes do not need to be added to effectively removes the discharge residue. And because they are linear motor equipped there is no wear on the drive components causing backlash.
